This exhibition focuses upon the artistic relationship between Japan and France, a relationship that has endured for over 150 years since the latter half of the 19th century. It will be on view at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, an institution that has been in the forefront of the efforts at preservation and public display of Japanese art in France since its founding in 1864. The roughly 1,400 works of art on display include carefully selected works from the museum's collection of more than 10,000 pieces together with works on loan from Japan. It will also feature a selection of pieces created in Europe showing a Japanese influence. The exhibition covers a wide range of time periods and genres, including arts and crafts, product design, graphic design and clothing design.

The exhibition begins with a chronology that explains the history of Japonism and then explores five themes: "Agents of Discovery," "Nature," "Time," "Movement" and "Innovation". The exhibition space is over 2,200 m2 large and covers three floors. The final theme is "Innovation". It is located upon the third floor, transformed into a new exhibition hall by architect Jean Nouvel who also retained vestiges of historic building. Among the many displays is a room dedicated to IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE "NIHON BUYO", "BOKUGI," and a display of Ikko Tanaka posters. The installation includes: "Nihon Buyo" (1981, in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs), "The New Spirit of Japanese Design: Print" (1987, also from the collection), and "Buto Kaden #2" (1996, courtesy DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion). Also on display from the museum's permanent collection are "Colombe" and the "PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE Guest Artist Series No.1 Yasumasa Morimura" in the "movement" category, and a poster from the "ISSEY MIYAKE A ŪN" exhibition that the museum hosted in 1988, now in the "Discoverers" category.

This exhibition is co-organised by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and The Japan Foundation in the frame of the "Japonismes 2018: les âmes en résonance" program, which showcases the diversity of Japanese culture in Paris and other cities in France by February 2019.
