March 16 ― June 13, 2016
The National Art Center, Tokyo
This was the first exhibition to show all of Issey Miyake's work from 1970 to his most recent projects. It was organized by THE NATIONAL ART CENTER, TOKYO. The exhibit had three sections, A, B and C. Section A looked at work from the 1970s, while Section B showed the "Body" series that was developed from 1980 to 1985. For both Section A and B, Tokujin Yoshioka provided the grid body installations. Section C contained exhibits on five themes from 1980 onwards, as well as a hands-on corner and production demonstrations. The five themes were: "Materials," "Pleats," "IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE," "A-POC," "132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE" and "IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE." In "IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE," staff members used a pleats machine to demonstrate Miyake's unique pleats process. There were also video and music installations, and a video room. The art direction and Section C composition were provided by Taku Sato. Numerous workshops and talk programs were held throughout the exhibit period.
