Pop-up exhibition “I³ ― Issey Miyake, Irving Penn, Ikko Tanaka”
September 16 – November 23, 2025
Museum für Gestaltung Zürich
Issey Miyake was an avid admirer of photographer Irving Penn, and in 1986, Penn began to photograph ISSEY MIYAKE collection. Penn never went to an ISSEY MIYAKE show, and Miyake was never present while Penn was photographing. The “Visual Dialogue” woven through their respect for each other’s creativity continued for 13 years.
Beginning with the 1987 Spring-Summer collection, Penn’s photographs were combined with layout and typography by Ikko Tanaka to create ISSEY MIYAKE’s season posters. That series continued until 1999 Autumn-Winter collection.
The exhibition traces the collaboration among the three artists through 26 posters in the museum’s collection and an animation depicting the process by which the posters were created.
