This traveling exhibition by the Kyoto Costume Institute began in London and visited Munich before finally being held in Tokyo. THE MIYAKE ISSEY FOUNDATION loaned items for this exhibition that had previously not been taken on traveling exhibitions overseas. For the theme of “Tradition+Innovation” the exhibition featured “Sashiko” works from Miyake’s New York collections of 1970 and 1971 and the “Combat” series of 1971, featuring prints by illustrator Terry Johnson. Another theme was “Flatness,” which was represented by PLEATS PLEASE. The “PLEATS PLEASE Making Process 2012” exhibit demonstrated the method by which stitched garments are given their pleated finish by sandwiching them between paper. The prints used in the PLEATS PLEASE exhibit featured motifs from the “Combat” series that was being exhibited under the “Tradition+Innovation” theme, thus bringing the archival material right into the present.
