21_21 DESIGN SIGHT Exhibition:
Irving Penn and Issey Miyake: Visual Dialogue
September 16, 2011 ― April 8, 2012
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Tokyo, Japan
Miyake-designed clothing as seen through the lens of Irving Penn. Borne of the respect for each other’s work and trust in each other’s skill, Penn and Miyake collaborated for 13 consecutive years starting in 1987. Their work has been made into various formats, including large-scale projections, posters, and original prints in the exhibition. The foundation displayed 55 pieces from its archives of ISSEY MIYAKE posters drawn from Penn’s photographs of Miyake’s collections each season, with design and typography by Ikko Tanaka. “Issey Miyake: A Life in Fashion Design Seen through Posters” gallery tours also took place for the duration of the exhibition.
