About the Foundation
THE MIYAKE ISSEY FOUNDATION
At the intersection of culture and industry, design is the force that creates the realities of tomorrow’s world.
THE MIYAKE ISSEY FOUNDATION received accreditation from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and was officially founded in February 2004. Subsequently, it received cabinet approval to change its official status to a public interest incorporated foundation in February 2011.
The foundation’s work is based on the desire of Issey Miyake and his staff, global design leaders all, to become deeply involved in the development of design culture and its ability to enrich lifestyles, using the many artifacts from Japan’s artisanal history – including actual works, photos, video, and printed matter – as a source of inspiration. In so doing, the foundation hopes to contribute to society as a whole.
The foundation’s mission is twofold: firstly, to establish an environment for studying, restoring, and storing historical artifacts and implement innovative projects and events that inspire and invigorate the community; and secondly, through the practical application of these endeavors develop a strong program of activities that will encourage international interaction and help develop the talent of tomorrow.
